ARTist of the WEEK: Emma Davies

ARTist of the WEEK is Emma Davies. I found her at a website called
http://zainteriora.net

Dimensional sculptures from industrial materials by Emma Davies. Using unfamiliar materials such as colored industrial system – she creates objects that defy their physical origin and transform it to objects. Uncertain functionality, uniqueness, and war between delicacy and simplicity struggle inherent in these art objects.

Inspired by Typography

I want to share one of my favorite projects I made in college. We had to design a poster using one font family. I choose the font Bodoni. The typeface known as Bodoni was created in 1790 by an Italian-born typeface designer, Giambattista Bodoni. Bodoni is considered one of the first modern typefaces. It has quite a few defining typographic characteristics, including vertical stresses, vertical emphasis, which creates a strong contrast in the stroke weight. I have always been drawn to Bodoni for its clean and classic lines. This font also alludes to being expensive, and maybe why you can also find this font on the cover of VOGUE.

Who is Curtis Jere?

Curtis Jere wasn't actually a person. It was the name chosen by a design team composed of Curtis Freiler and Jerry Fels in the 1960’s. Fels was well known in the 40’s for his copper jewelry. Together with Curtis Freiler they founded the Artisan House in 1964. They specialized in a variety of home accessories and decorative arts mostly made of metal. Below are a few of their well known pieces. Their goal was to create gallery quality art for the masses. Every piece produced was signed C. Jere, which became the trademark for the Artisan House. Their pieces have recently gained popularity, and have increased in demand. I love the vintage chic look, and mixing the old with the new as shown in the photo featured in Nov issue of Elle Décor.

Spring Looks by Michael Kors

I just love Michael Kors Spring collection. He really knows how to dress women and his fit is impeccable. He showcases easy-breezier shapes like long, billowy blouses and swingy dresses. His focus is on comfort. Being short myself, I just love his part platform, part wedge shoes. Your feet will thank you for giving them a break from painful pointy stilettos, while your wing-women friends will be happy that it’s easy to spot a much taller you in a crowded room. Pair these with a 60’s inspired A-line coat, and you’ll be ready to hit the town.

Lots of Love for Flora Grubb!

I love succulents and I am obsessed with them. For those of you who don't have a green thumb they are perfect! They are easy to grow since they don’t need a lot of water. Succulents can be used to make a beautiful bouquet, or make wonderful gifts! There are so many different varieties, and are beautiful when grown together. I enjoy stopping by different nurseries to try to find new ones I don’t have. One place I absolutely love is Flora Grubb. If you are ever in San Francisco you have to stop by. Please check out her website www.floragrubb.com. Yes, that is really her name! Her nursery is more like a museum where the plants are the art. It is truly like the secret garden. Once inside, you would never know you were in the middle of the busy city. It is so peaceful and beautiful. Her hanging terrariums are to die for. My co-worker got me one with an air plant in it but I love putting succulents in them. Flora Grubb also has the largest succulents I have ever seen. (similar to the ones featured above). She also has the cutest little stone owls so be sure to check those out too! I sure love all of my succulents and enjoy watching them grow and hope you like them too!
